SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word men's cross country team continued its dominance of the UIW Twilight, winning the event for the sixth year in a row Tuesday.
The season-opening race, renamed the Sam Musgrave UIW Twilight, saw the Cardinals come away with 28 points, well ahead of runner-up Texas State (57) and third-place UTSA (63).
While Texas State's Jaxon Asbill (18:15.69) and UTSA's Andruw Villa (18:17.47) took the top-two spots, positions 3-6 all went to the Cardinals.
Jared Laverty finished third in 18:38.48,
Christian Castro-Cruz was fourth in 18:43.39,
Ethan Malesich was fifth in 18:45.18 and
Jeremiah Garcia placed sixth in 18:46.09.
Completing the scoring in 11th place,
Joshua Odums finished in 19:04.17. Other Incarnate Word runners to crack the top-20 were
Anthony Zapata (18th, 19:20.88),
Luis Tovar (19th, 19:21.24) and
Michael Casso (20th, 19:22.66).
UIW will be back in action on Sept. 12, hosting another event, the UIW Invitational. This race will be held at the Windcrest Golf Club.
Prior to Tuesday's event, UIW held a ceremony to honor former runner Sam Musgrave, who lost his life in a car accident over the summer. A story on the ceremony will run on uiwcardinals.com on Sept. 2.
