Incarnate Word Reaches 30-Win Plateau in Victory Over Lions

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team completed the series sweep of Southland Conference foe East Texas A&M on Wednesday afternoon with an 11-3 run-rule victory at Cardinals Field.

Incarnate Word moves its overall record to 30-15 with a 15-6 record in Southland play, while East Texas A&M is 6-40 on the year with a 1-20 league mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Incarnate Word gained a 5-0 lead with a five-run first inning, highlighted by RBI singles from juniors Jaisy Caceres and Ayla Gonzales.
  • The Lions added one run in both the second and third innings before an RBI single from senior Victoria Altamirano moved UIW ahead by four runs.
  • The Cardinals used an RBI single from sophomore Prisais Quintero to score two more runs and build an 8-2 advantage in the fourth inning.
  • After East Texas A&M scored its final run in the sixth on the Lions' second solo home run of the day, Incarnate Word brought three runs across the plate in the home half of the frame to end the game via run rule.
  • Gonzales had another RBI single in the sixth, while fellow junior Bryanna Fuentes ended the game with an RBI double.
NOTES
  • Senior Samantha Portillo (5-2) got the win in the circle after allowing two runs on three hits in three innings of work.
  • Fellow senior Elly Eckrich collected her first save of the year, giving up just one run on three hits in three innings out of the bullpen,
  • Quintero led the offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, a run scored, and two stolen bases.
  • Fuentes was 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, a run, and an RBI, while Altamirano, Gonzales, senior Dominique Guerra, and junior Sydney Zenon each had two hits in the game.

Incarnate Word's busy week continues on Friday, April 17, when the team opens up a three-game Southland Conference series with a doubleheader in Beaumont, Texas. Game one is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
