Cardinals Fall in Low-Scoring Affair at Northwestern State

NATCHITOCHES, LA. – A five-game win streak came to an end for the University of the Incarnate Word softball team on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals fell to Northwestern State University 3-2 at Lady Demon Diamond.

Incarnate Word moves its overall record to 27-15 with a 12-6 record in Southland play, while Northwestern State improves to 21-21 on the year with a 10-8 league mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After two scoreless innings to open the game, Incarnate Word broke through with two runs in the third inning as junior Bryanna Fuentes drove in a run with an RBI double and later scored on an NSU fielding error.
  • Northwestern State took a 3-2 lead just one inning later, plating three runs on five hits in the fourth.
  • Both sides went scoreless the rest of the way as neither program was able to bring extra runs across the plate.
NOTES
  • Robledo took a turn in the circle for the second straight game and did not allow a base runner over 2.1 innings of relief.
  • Fuentes led the offense with a 2-for-4 performance, including her 11th double of the year, to go along with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Junior Jaisy Caceres and seniors Victoria Altamirano and Madison Dorrow had one hit apiece for the Cardinals.

Incarnate Word begins a busy week next week, with the team playing six conference games in The Lone Star State. On Tuesday, UIW welcomes East Texas A&M to Cardinals Field for a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. before the series finale takes place on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.
