Incarnate Word Sweeps Series with Texas A&M - Corpus Christi

SAN ANTONIO, TX – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team collected a 9-1 victory over Texas A&M - Corpus Christi in just six innings on Saturday afternoon at Cardinals Field.

With the win, Incarnate Word moves to 17-8 overall with a perfect 3-0 start to Southland Conference play, while Corpus Christi falls to 5-20 on the season with an 0-3 record in League play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Corpus Christi scored one run on a hit and two walks in the opening inning, but Incarnate Word senior Samantha Portillo (2-2) held the Islanders just one hit over the next five innings to seal her second win of the year.
  • Incarnate Word answered the Islander run in the first with a three-run home run from junior Erin Perez in the home half of the inning for a 3-1 lead.
  • In the second inning, Perez added an RBI single, followed by an RBI single from fellow junior Jaisy Caceres and an RBI double from junior Bryanna Fuentez to build a 6-1 lead.
  • Senior Victoria Altamirano moved the UIW advantage to 7-1 with an RBI double in the third inning.
  • RBI singles from Caceres and fellow junior Aynsli Lawson in the sixth put the game away and forced a victory via run rule for the Cardinals.
NOTES
  • Patillo pitched a complete game two-hitter with two strikeouts on just 89 pitches in the circle.
  • Perez finished 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI, while Fuentes was 3-for-4 with two doubles of her own.
  • Caceres totaled two hits and two RBI in the win, as junior Sydney Zenon also had two hits and scored three runs.
