HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nicholls State scored two runs in the opening inning of play for an early 2-0 lead.

  • Incarnate Word starting pitcher Samantha Portillo kept UIW within striking distance, holding Nicholls to just two runs on three hits with four strikeouts across five innings in the circle.
  • The Cardinal offense came to life in the sixth inning of action as juniors Bryanna Fuentes and Jaisy Caceres led off the inning with back-to-back singles.
  • Sophomore Kennedy Hill hit a pinch-hit RBI single to put Incarnate Word on the scoreboard before senior Madison Dorrow hit a pinch-hit RBI single of her own in the next at-bat to score two runs and give UIW a 3-2 lead.
  • A sacrifice fly from junior Ayla Gonzales and a two-RBI double from senior Victoria Altamirano added three more runs to the Cardinals' total, moving the advantage to 6-2.
  • Nicholls put runners on second and third with two out in the top of the seventh inning, but senior Bella Mitchell (6-3) forced a ground out to preserve the win.
NOTES
