Men's Tennis Collects Two Wins Over Alcorn State

VICKSBURG, MS. – The University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team swept a Saturday doubleheader against Alcorn State University, winning both matches against the Braves by identical 4-0 scores at Hall's Ferry Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED (MATCH ONE)
  • Incarnate Word mounted a comeback in doubles play to claim the first point of the match with Alcorn State.
  • After ASU won the contest at No. 2, Incarnate Word's sophomore tandem of Alexandre Chauvel and Alejandro Hernandez won 6-3 in the No. 1 position. 
  • Grad student Emilio Vila teamed with freshman Augustin Salazar at No. 3 for a 6-3 triumph of their own to seal the 1-0 lead for IUW.
  • Salazar began singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5, followed by a 6-0, 6-2 win by Hernandez at No. 1.
  • Vila cemented the team win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 to complete the shutout.

HOW IT HAPPENED (MATCH TWO)
  • It was a clean sweep in doubles play for IUW in the second match of the day as Salazar and Vila again won by a 6-3 score at No. 3 before sophomore Marcel Miralles and freshman Santiago Flyckt registered an identical 6-3 win in the second doubles spot.
  • In singles play, Vila won in the No. 1 position after his opponent was forced to withdraw, and Miralles was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at No. 2 to put the Cardinals ahead 3-0 as a team.
  • Freshman Ian Uraga gave IUW its second team win of the season with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6 in his collegiate debut.

UP NEXT
The Cardinals have a quick turnaround as they remain in Mississippi for two separate matches against Jackson State University and Mississippi Valley State University at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively.
