University of the Incarnate Word Athletics

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team (1-6-1, 1-2 OVC) captured its first conference win after a game-winner from Diego Robles, defeating UTRGV (2-2-2, 0-0-1 OVC), 2-1, on Sunday night at Benson Stadium.

With just under nine minutes to go in the first half, UTRGV connected on a corner to take a 1-0 lead heading into the break. Juan Monrreal recorded the Cardinals' second shot of the half with five minutes remaining, while UTRGV finished the opening period with 10 shots. Salmeron made three saves in the half.

Emanuel Martinez put UIW on the board 11 minutes into the second half, scoring his first goal of the season off an assist from Monrreal. 

The game remained tied at one as Diego Robles delivered the game-winner with five minutes remaining. Robles recorded four shots in the second half before capitalizing on his final attempt, sending a shot into the back of the net to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. The Cardinal defense held firm in the final minutes, securing UIW's first conference win of the season.

The Cardinals remain at home to host SIUE on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 4:30 p.m. at Benson Stadium.
