CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team went 2-1 to start conference play on the road against Texas A&M Corpus Christi this weekend.
The Cardinals put up big numbers this weekend and started early. In the second inning UIW sent three runs across the plate on three hits. The Islanders cut into that lead in the third, however, UIW went on to score 11 runs in the final three innings to take game one by a final score of 15-2.
In the second game of Friday's double header TAMU-CC struck first scoring in the first inning. UIW responded in the second, after loading the bases Ayla Gonzalez was walked to score the first run and a sacrifice fly from
Victoria Altamirano gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. In the sixth
Dominique Guerra singled to score
Gracie Alejo to make it 3-1. The Cardinals held that lead through seven, winning game two.
In the third and final game of the weekend the Cards once again jumped out to an early lead.
Jenny Robleo pitched a nearly perfect a game not allowing a hit until the sixth inning. After a pitching change and the Islander bats heating up, the Cardinals dropped the final game 3-2.
