HOUSTON – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team had historic win Saturday morning in the Easton Classic II. On Saturday the Cardinals earned their third win over a power-four school and their first over an ACC squad, defeating Pittsburgh 16-10.
After a heartbreaking loss in the first game of the tournament the Cardinals looked to turn things around against Pittsburgh on day two.
The seesaw game was opened with a home run to right field from
Victoria Altamirano. The Panthers were able to get a few on base over the next few innings but never able to bring a runner across until the third, when Pitt went up 4-1 on the Cardinals. UIW responded well in the very next inning as
Jasmine Sierra homered to left field.
Kennedy Hill followed this up with a 2 RBI double which tied things up at four in the fourth.
Pitt wasn't done and in the fifth inning the pendulum swung the other direction and the Panthers scored six runs taking a 10-4 lead. However, just as they did earlier in the game the Cardinals responded.
Erin Perez stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a grand slam cutting the defect to just two. UIW continued to pour it on the fifth finishing the inning with 10 more runs and leading 14-10.
In the top of the seventh the Cardinals added two more runs, giving them even more of a cushion near the end of the game. In the end UIW wouldn't need the extra runs taking the game in seventh 16-10.
