BEAUMONT, TX – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team fell to Lamar, 3-1, on Thursday evening at McDonald Gym. The loss marked the Cardinals' first conference road setback of the season.
Set 1: UIW 25 (1), LU 13 (0)
UIW controlled much of the opening set, closing on a 6-0 run to secure a 1-0 lead. Vanessa Eregie powered the attack, leading all players with six kills in the frame.
Set 2: UIW 23 (1), LU 25 (1)
The road Cardinals opened set two with a commanding 12-7 lead before the home team tied things up at 18-18. Both teams exchanged points to a 23-23 lead before Lamar closed out the set on a 2-0 run to even things at 1-1.
Set 3: UIW 24 (1), LU 26 (2)
The Red and Black jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the third set before Lamar battled back to even the score at 14-all. After UIW built a 24-20 advantage to reach set point, the Cardinals saw Lamar rally with a 6-0 run to steal the frame.
Set 4: UIW 23 (1), LU 25 (3)
After scoring the first point of the frame, UIW never regained the lead and ultimately dropped the final set — and the match.
Kyla Malone led the way for the Cardinals with a double-double, posting a team-high 18 kills to go along with 14 digs. Calissa Allison tallied her 14th double-double of the season, recording a team-best 38 assists and 16 digs. On the defensive end, Ashton Rogers anchored the back row with a match-high 33 digs, while Vanessa Eregie paced the front line with a match-leading five blocks.
UIW travels to Nacogdoches on Saturday to face league-leading Stephen F. Austin. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m.
