SAN ANTONIO – The University of Incarnate Word men's soccer team played their first two games of the season this weekend. First a 2-0 loss to University of Indiana Indianapolis and then getting a draw against Gardner-Webb University.
In game one on Thursday the Cards were locked in a back-and-forth battle with the Jaguars. Late in the first half UIW conceded two goals and were down headed in the locker room at halftime. The second half was physical with five yellow cards being handed out. However, the score remained the same in the second 45 minutes and the Cardinals fell 2-0.
In game number two UIW looked to bounce back. Garner-Webb and the Cardinals remained even at 0-0 for most of the game until a breakthrough goal by the Runnin' Bulldogs in the 59
th minute gave GWU the lead. 15 minutes later the Cardinals responded with
Sello Diphoko sending a ball in from the left wing intended for
Erick Rios. The ball was deflected by the defender into the goal, tying the match at one a piece. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
