SAN ANTONIO- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team swept the Islanders in a three game conference series this past weekend. Coming into the series off a loss at Jackson State on Tuesday, the Cardinals were looking to get themselves back on the win column. With the three wins over Texas A&M- Corpus Christi, they now sit in third place in the latest Southland Conference poll.
Game 1
Game one went the full seven innings with UIW winning, 6-2. Freshman pitcher Larissa Jacquez pitched the full seven innings for the Cardinals, capturing her fourth win of the season.
An RBI single from Jillian Guiterrez in the first, started off the Cardinals run as Ryleigh Mata ran in for the score. In the bottom of the second, Maddison Guillen and Baylee Lemons put up the third and fourth runs for UIW to extend the lead, 3-0.
Things got stagnant for an inning, but the Cardinals jumped right back in and loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth. Aaliyah Garcia walked, and Dominique Guerra was forced to walk in for another UIW score. In the same inning, the Islanders threw a wild pitch and Mata ran in for her second score of the game.
Game 2
Game two showed UIW's dominance for the series as they took the win, 11-2, in six innings. Annie Gunther took home the win with three strikeouts.
UIW exploded early, scoring four runs in the first. After a bit of a lull, they scored three in the bottom of the fourth, then exploded once again in the bottom of the sixth to run rule the Islanders. Altamirano led UIW with three hits, including a triple to right center field that scored two Cardinal runs. Freshman Jaisy Caceres had three RBIs in her seventh start of the season. She went 4-2 on the day.
Game 3
For the final game of the series, UIW completed the sweep with a shutout win, 4-0. Sophomore pitcher, Samantha Portillo pitched a complete game for her first full shoutout of the season, to make her record 3-1.
Both Mata and Garcia had an RBI for UIW, with Mata also scoring two runs. The junior second baseman recorded her first home run of the season. Altamirano once again led UEI in hits with three.
Portillo had a outstanding performance in the circle. Only allowing two hits against the 23 batters faced. She also had six strikeouts, that became her season high.
