Indoor Track & Field Brings Home Several SLC Accolades

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word track & field teams had several student-athletes named 2023 Southland Indoor Track and Field All-Conference honorees. Isaiah Hudgens was the star of the show earning 2023 Southland Men's Indoor Athlete of the Year and Outstanding Field Events titles. He was joined by teammates Garrett Stokes, Joy Gill, Klaire Bentley, and Mati Poli, who all took first-place finishes. They were all led by head coach Dr. Derek Riedel who won the Southland Conference Men's Coach of the Year.

Hudgens also was named to the All-Conference First team after his victories in the Heptathlon and Pole Vault.

Griffin Neal took the silver medal in the 3,000 and 5,000-meter runs, his teammate Kyle Sieracki placed second in the Pole Vault and Gabrielle Thomas placed second in the triple jump earning them a spot on the all-conference second team. The Cardinals had seven student-athletes Angelina Sahagun, Christopher Daniels, Jada Green, Jared Laverty, King Grimm, Miguel Flores, Nicola Paletti earn third team status.

This is the fourth conference title and the fourth Coach of the Year award for coach Riedel since he joined the nest in 2005.

The Cardinals will be back in action later this week as the indoor season starts March 17 at the UTSA Invitational.
