SAN ANTONIO- The University of the Incarnate Word Softball team went 1-2 this past weekend in the first conference test against the Colonels from Nicholls State University. Only one of the three games went into extra innings, but all three contests were competitive showings for the Cardinals.
Ryleigh Mata collected four hits and two RBIs over the weekend including a clutch game-tying single that brought home a run in the sixth inning of the Cardinals' win over Nicholls. Victoria Altamirano also continued a great week notching three hits over the series. In those three hits, she collected a double, a triple, and her second home run of the season. Altamirano also had three runs and three RBIs to compliment her hitting statistics.
Aaliyah Garcia was a standout this weekend. Though she went 1-1 on the record, in each of the two games she started and pitched she went the full game. In a total of 14.0 innings pitched Garcia collected 12 strikeouts to make it a total of 38 for the season. In the Southland Conference, she ranks seventh in total strikeouts.
The Cardinals will return home this weekend for their conference home opener against the Cowgirls from McNeese. The game at Southern University that was to take place on Monday, March 13 has been canceled.
