SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team finished the season in style, taking down the Liberty Flames 2-0 and securing the second seed in the Ohio Valley Conference playoffs.
The Cardinals got on the board early with a goal scored from just outside the box by
Timothy Ospina. The goal scored only 1:20 minutes into the game was the fifth fastest in school history, just edging out head coach Kiki Laura's goal in 2003 scored 1:29 minutes into the game.
UIW continued to put the pressure on the flames and were able to score another goal late in the first half to put them up 2-0. The defense stood strong for the remainder of the game and was able to post another shutout.
This win not only put the Cardinals in second place in the OVC, but also gives them a first-round bye, automatically advancing to the semi-finals.
Coach Kiki said, "This was the objective at the start of the season and so it's great when you can achieve goals you set from the beginning of the year. It should be noted that achieving anything in our program is always rooted from all the hard work done from each member of our current program and all those that have come before this year. We will fight for a title for all those will us and those who have come before us."
The Cardinals fight for the inaugural OVC men's soccer championship will get underway next week on November 8 at 3 p.m. CT. You can find more updates about the post season tournament on the
OVC website.
