HAMMOND, Louisiana – The University of the incarnate Word softball team ended its 2022 season on Wednesday night, falling to Houston Baptist University (HBU), 8-4, on day two of the Southland Conference Tournament at North Oak Park. This is the first postseason appearance for the Cardinals in UIW history. 

The Huskies struck in the bottom of the first inning before the Cardinals responded. Ryleigh Mata knocked an RBI single through the left side to tie the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the second frame. 

Trailing 4-1, Savannah Behabetz stepped up to the plate to spark the Cardinal offense. Behabetz registered an RBI sacrifice fly to bring in Maddison Guillen. Avalon Sanchez followed with a hit to center field that stunned the Husky defense, driving in another run to bring UIW within one (4-3). 

HBU extended its lead to 8-3. Aaliyah Garcia used an RBI single to add a run to the board, but the late rally fell short as the Cardinals concluded their season.
