LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team dropped the first two games of the Red Raider Classic on Saturday. UIW fell in game one to the University of Northern Colorado (UNC), 6-1, followed by a close, 7-4 matchup against Texas Tech University (TTU) at Rocky Johnson Field.
NOTABLES
- Avalon Sanchez went yard for her sixth home run, and her 23rd RBI, of the season against the Bears.
- Bella Sanchez knocked her second home run against the Red Raiders.
- Teanna Lucio hit the first triple of her career against TTU.
UIW 1, UNCO 6

Avalon Sanchez and
Kendall McGary all registered a hit against the Bears, with A. Sanchez's being a solo home run. UIW sent three pitchers to the circle, but UNC secured a 6-1 win in the Cardinals' opening game of the Red Raider Classic.
UIW 4, TTU 7
The Cardinals rallied for game two, jumping ahead, 3-0, heading into the bottom of the third inning. This explosive start consisted of a solo home run from B. Sanchez followed by an RBI single from Lucio to bring in
Maddie Boldt as UIW took a 2-0 lead. In the third inning, the Red Raiders had a pair of errors that led to another Cardinal run crossing the plate to extend their lead to 3-0.
TTU unleashed its offense to tie the game at three after a home run over the left-field wall.
With a tied game, Lucio stepped up to the plate and hit a first-pitch triple to left field. Mata followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Lucio as the Cardinals regained their advantage (4-3).
The Red Raiders answered with their second home run of the game to give them a 6-4 advantage at the end of the fourth inning. TTU added another run in the bottom of the fifth frame, extending its lead to 7-4. UIW put two runners on base in the top of the seventh inning, but TTU escaped with the victory.
UP NEXT
UIW prepares for a doubleheader on day two of the Red Raider Classic, beginning with a rematch against UNC at 10 a.m. CT on Sunday followed by another contest against TTU at 3 p.m.
