PHOENIX, Ariz. –
Maddie Boldt and
Avalon Sanchez both had a powerful day, but the Cardinals fell to Colorado State University 11-6 (CSU) and Colgate University 4-3 (CU). Boldt registered her third home run of the Lopes Up Classic, and seventh of the season, whereas Sanchez tallied her first of the tournament and fourth of the season on the second day at the GCU Softball Stadium.
UIW (6) vs. CSU (11)
Ashley Trapp started the game for the Cardinals, pitching 2.2 innings.
Madison Floyd,
Annie Gunther,
Maddy Blake and
Natalie Myers also saw action for UIW.
CSU jumped ahead first, driving in three runs in the top of the third inning. The momentum continued into the fourth as the Rams added three more to the board. With a two-run home run over the center-field wall, Sanchez answered to bring in Boldt and cut the lead to 6-2. Boldt then followed Sanchez's lead with a homer of her own.
The Cardinal's late rally consisting of three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning fell short as CSU won, 11-6.
UIW (3) vs. CU (4)
Boldt started UIW on a high note, knocking a two-run home run over the right centerfield wall to put the Cardinals ahead 2-0. Sanchez followed with an RBI double down the left-field line that brought in
Kendall McGary and put UIW up 3-0.
A tough third inning in the circle for the Cardinals allowed a four-run stretch for Colgate that gave it the 4-3 lead. UIW kept fighting, but it could not capitalize as Colgate secured the 4-3 win.
