SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team fell to Cleveland State University (CSU), 4-3, in the 2022 season opener on Thursday night at H-E-B Field.
 
Ashley Trapp led the Cardinals in the circle to keep CSU scoreless through six innings, tying her career record with 12 strikeouts.
 
Maddie Boldt came out hot in the second inning with a home run over center field to put UIW ahead 1-0. CSU loaded the bases before Trapp added to her strikeout count to keep the Cardinal lead.
 
UIW came out swinging in the fourth inning. Kendall McGary hit a double to bring in Teanna Lucio, extending the Cardinal advantage to 2-0. Avalon Sanchez followed with a hard hit down the right side line to bring in McGary, forcing a Viking pitching change.
 
CSU came out in the seventh inning with hot bats, tying the game at three. A hard hit to shortstop brought in another runner to give CSU the lead, 4-3.
 
UIW battled back at the plate and put two runners on base, but a pop-up to shortstop gave CSU the win, 4-3.

The Cardinals take on the University of Wisconsin Green Bay on Friday, Feb. 11, at 5 p.m. CT on the second day of the 2022 UIW Invitational.
