HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1 vs. Texas Southern
This young Cardinals team showed their grit in the opening game of the season as they came back from down three runs in the bottom of the sixth to win 7-6. The game had many firsts for a Cardinals team that started six freshmen and one JUCO transfer.
After shaking off the jitters of the first inning, down 2-0, the Cardinals punched back in the bottom of the third. Alvarez-Lopez put the Cardinals on the board with an RBI double to right center. Freshman Abby Frank scored the first run of the young season and the first of her career with the hit.
Alvarez-Lopez was followed up by freshman Bella Sanchez who got her second hit (first career hit came in the second inning) of the game with an RBI single through the left side to tie the game at 2-2.
The theme continued as another freshman, Jazmine Torres, also got her first career hit and RBI as she singled through the right side. The single gave the team a 3-2 lead.
The Tigers showed their muscle as they put together two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead.
Down three with six outs left, the Cardinals buckled down and strung together some great at bats. McGary got it started with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-4. With the bases loaded, Alvarez-Lopez put the ball in play to third. That's all it took as a wild throw allowed two runners to score to tie it up.
Savannah Behabetz hit a sacrifice fly to left to drive McGary home and give the Cardinals the final lead of the game.
Game 2 vs. North Dakota
After a slow start to the game that saw UIW take a 1-0 lead after four innings, the game picked up in the fifth. North Dakota scored two runs in the top of the fifth to give themselves the late lead.
But the Cardinals responded, as they had in the previous game, with two of their own to regain the lead at 3-2. North Dakota tied it up with a home run in the top of the sixth and the score would remain tied for two more innings. Olivarez made a stunning diving catch, turning it into a double play, as she threw out the runner at first in a momentum-changing play.
In the eighth inning, the Fighting Hawks came out swinging and put up three quick runs to give them what should have been a comfortable win.
But in the bottom half of the inning, the Cardinals showed their resilience once again led by Torres and Olivarez. Torres grounded out to short but secured an RBI in the process. Then, Olivarez ripped an RBI single to left field to cut the lead to 6-5.
The Cardinals were unable to complete to comeback, but they showed that they are never out of any game.
