HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1 vs. Alcorn State
Some games are won in ugly scraps and this was one of them for the Cardinals as they edged Alcorn in the bottom of the seventh after a couple of errors by the Bravehawks.
It was a scoreless game through four innings before UIW struck first in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman
Abby Frank continued her clutch bat as she hit an RBI single to score
Kendall McGary, giving the team a 1-0 lead.
Alcorn State answered with a flurry of hits to score two runs to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh. Myers came in to record the last out with a strikeout.
After a pair of Bravehawk's mistakes, it allowed the Cardinals to score two runs in the bottom half of the seventh to win the game. It marked the second game of the season that the Cardinals won in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The lone batter that Myers faced allowed her to be in position to earn her first collegiate win.
Game 2 vs. Mississippi Valley State
Another scrappy game that saw the Cardinals as the victors turned into a 6-3 win over MVSU.
UIW scored at least one run in the first four innings of the game and that turned out to be enough. The offense was led by senior
Delaney Guzman's RBI double in the second, then juniors
Hailey Goins and
Tori Alvarez-Lopez's RBI doubles in the third inning.
Those runs proved to be all that
Renee Hoffman needed as she went the distance while striking out five batters to earn her second win of the season.
