Coleman’s two-hitter not enough to lift Cardinals past Cowgirls

LAKE CHARLES, La.. -- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team dropped the final game of its conference opening series against McNeese 1-0, despite a great pitching performance in the circle from sophomore Brett Coleman.

NOTABLES
  • Brett Coleman pitched her eighth complete game of the season, tossing six innings and surrendering no earned runs on a season-low two hits with three strikeouts.
  • This was the second time this season Coleman didn't allow any earned runs.
  • Senior first baseman Hope Sobolewski went 2-3, her third multi-hit game in the last five outings. She now leads the team with a .261 batting average on the season.
  • Renee Hoffman came on as a pinch hitter and worked a walk to reach base safely for the fourth consecutive game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
McNeese scored on an error in the second inning to pick up their first and only run of the game. In the sixth inning, Hoffman reached base on a one-out walk. Jessica Rodriguez laced a single down the right field line and advanced on an errant throw to second base. The Cardinals had two runners in scoring position with just one out, but couldn't string together any hits to tie the game up or take the lead. The final score was McNeese 1, UIW 0.

UP NEXT
The Cardinals return home for a midweek matchup against UT-Arlington on Tuesday at 6 p.m. (CT).
