HOUSTON, TEXAS -- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team came up short in a pair of games today, falling to Kennesaw State, 5-4, and then to Houston, 16-0.

- Freshman catcher Sam Wendel hit her first career home run in the opening game of the day against Kennesaw State, finishing 1-2 with two walks and two runs.
- Shelby Neatherlin launched her first home run of the season, cutting the deficit to 4-3 against Kennesaw State in the fourth inning. She went 2-4 with an RBI and a run that game.
- Jessica Rodriguez came on as a pinch hitter against Kennesaw State and walked home a run in her only plate appearance of the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: vs. Kennesaw State
After a scoreless first inning, Kennesaw State struck first with a pair of runs in the second. UIW immediately responded, scoring two of their own off Wendel's home run and Shaw's single to right field. The Owls jumped back in front in the bottom of the third with two more runs, but again the Cardinals responded with two in the fourth. Kennesaw State scored off an RBI single in the fifth and held on to win the game 5-4.
Game 2: vs. Houston
The Cougars got ahead early with a 10-run first inning and never looked back, going on to win 16-0.
UP NEXT
The Cardinals have a rematch against Kennesaw State at 10:30 a.m. (CT) Saturday, followed by a 1 p.m. (CT) matchup against Northern Illinois.
