SAN ANTONIO, Texas – In a game that featured four total home runs, the University of the Incarnate Word softball hit their shots at the most opportune time, as the Cardinals took game three and the series, 4-3, over Central Arkansas Saturday afternoon from Cardinals Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After UIW (5-14 overall, 2-4 SLC) took the lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from
Hope Sobolewski that scored
Marcela Lopez, the Bears (13-12, 4-2) scored a run in three-straight innings to take a 3-1 lead entering the bottom of the fourth.
The bottom of the inning saw UIW bring seven Cardinals to the plate, two home runs, and a 4-3 home lead.
Shelby Neatherlin started the inning with a single, then crossed home on Sobolewski's game-tying, two-run blast. Two batters later,
Delaney Guzman put the Cardinals ahead for good with a solo shot to left.
UCA threatened in the top of the sixth, as the Bears had the bases loaded with nobody out. But Cardinal hurler,
Sarah Leal, was unfazed as they were facing three of the strongest hitters in the Bears lineup, as the Kyle, Texas, native got back-to-back strikeouts and a force out to end the threat with UIW still ahead, 4-3.
The Bears had one last gasp in the decisive top of the seventh, as reigning Southland Conference Hitter of the Week, Libby Morris, hit a two-out single, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. But Leal got Kailla Searcy to fly out to end the game.
LEADERS
Sobolewski went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and accounted for three of the Cardinals' four RBIs. Leal (5-4) earned another complete-game win in the circle, as she gave up 11 hits, three runs, and two walks while striking out four.
Morris led UCA with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, with one RBI and two runs scored. Starter Ellie Reaves (2-3) took the loss, as she allowed six hits and four runs while striking out three in 3.1 innings.
