Fernan-GOAL!! Laverde’s Late Tally Lifts Cardinals Past Oakland

DALLAS, Texas – Looking like The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team was going to play in second overtime match in as many games, Fernando Laverde deflected a shot off an Oakland defender for the go-ahead goal with eight minutes remaining in regulation to lift the Cardinals past the Golden Grizzlies, 2-1, to conclude the SMU Tournament Sunday at Westcott Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first half was a slow-moving affair, with only five total shots in the first 45 minutes, three from UIW (2-1-1). Oakland (1-3-0) made the most of its limited chances, as both shots hit the target.
Ryan Osborne continued his strong weekend play, scoring the match's first goal in the 13th minute, as Trinidad Luna sent a volley into the box and Osborne banged it home from six yards out.

The Golden Grizzlies tied the match three minutes later on a tally from Jacob Moore from eight yards away.

The Cardinals controlled most of the second half, outshooting Oakland 6-3. That hard work eventually paid off as Laverde found the back of the net, assisted by Thomas Bibby, with just eight minutes left in regulation. Laverde shot from 12 yards out and was inadvertently deflected off an Oakland defender.

The Cardinals maintained the pressure, as Laverde had another shot, this one stopped by Wes Mink.

Oakland had one final attempt in the final seconds, but Nick Strack's shot went wide.

Laverde joined Roberto Diaz Fernando and Carlos Guerrero on the All-Tournament Team.

LEADERS

Laverde and Osborne were the scorers for the Cardinals, while Luna and Bibby registered assists. Brendan Brown (2-1-1) made two saves for the win.

Moore was the lone point producer for the Golden Grizzlies, while Mink stopped two shots on goal.
