Corpus Christi, TX - The University of the Incarnate Word softball team ended the 2017 campaign by winning the last two games of the season against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi. On Saturday, the Cardinals edged out the Islanders 3-1 in eight innings.
The Cardinals kicked things off in the top of the first inning when Danielle Ramirez scored the opening run on a passed ball. In the bottom of the inning, the Islanders got on the board when Liz Carter reached on a fielders choice scoring Savannah Sandoval to tie the game at 1-1.
It was a pitchers duel the rest of the game between Joanna Valencia and Carter as both matched each other pitch for pitch until the top of the eight inning. Kristin Hebert reached on an error that scored Emily Castro and Ramirez.
That would be enough for UIW to complete the 3-1 victory in the final game of the season. Ramirez led the offense going 4-4 and scoring two runs, while also stealing a base. Victoria Bratcher, Brigitte Gauvin, and Hebert each had a hit. Carter led the Islanders with one RBI.
Valencia got her team high seventh victory of the season after her outstanding pitching performance. she went the full 8.0 while allowing just one earned run on five hits. Carter also pitched the full game allowing three runs and seven hits.
The Cardinals finish the season by winning the series against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi and finished with a 7-17 record on the road.
