SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth en route to an 11-2 five-inning win over the UIW softball team Wednesday evening from the Bobcat Softball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After UIW went down in order in the top of the first, Texas State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI triple by Ariel Ortiz.

The Bobcats threatened in the bottom of the second with runners at the corners and two outs, but Bridget Stein got Ortiz to pop up to end the inning unscathed.

After Christiana McDowell led off the bottom of the third with a single to left-center, Taylor Webb cleared the bases with a two-run home run to center field for a 3-0 Bobcat lead.

Texas State doubled its lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth following back-to-back-to-back home runs by McDowell, Ortiz, and Jaelyn Young. The Bobcats finished with eight runs in the frame.

The Cardinals didn't back down without a fight, however, as Danielle Ramirez had her second hit of the game to lead off the top of the fifth, which was followed by a two-run home run by Kristin Hebert to make the score 11-2.

LEADERS

UIW (4-16) was led by Ramirez, who had two of the team's four hits, as she went 2-for-2 for the Cardinals. Hebert had the big hit as she went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI.

Ortiz went 3-for-4 to lead Texas State (14-4) with a run and four RBI.

UP NEXT

UIW plays its home and Southland Conference opener on Friday at 4 p.m. with a doubleheader against Sam Houston.
