PHOENIX, ARIZONA – Two second half goals propelled the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Wisconsin-Green Bay at Grand Canyon's soccer field on Sunday afternoon.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first half despite a number of opportunities. UIW had six shots, while the Phoenix took five.
The Cardinals (3-2) opened the score in the 70
th minute off a corner kick.
William Redmann (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) found
Noah Keats (Exeter, Eng./The King's School), who headed in his fourth goal of the season and third game-winning goal. Then in the 87
th minute, UIW secured the win with another goal from
Dylan Kelly (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic HS). Kelly received a long ball in the box from
Callum Wright (Swindon, Eng./Royal Wootton Bassett Academy), and finished for his first goal of the season.
"This was our most complete game of the season," said UIW head coach
Vince Martinez. "To play 90 minutes in 100 degree temperature is not an easy task. The boys played inspired soccer today and dug deep to get the result."
The Phoenix (1-2-1) totaled nine shots compared to UIW's 10, but none got past the Cardinals' goalkeeper, senior
Kieran O'Boyle (Blackpool, Eng./St. Mary's Catholic), who finished with three saves and his second clean sheet of the season.
Ben Conway (Wigan, Eng./Hawkley Hall) led all players with four shot attempts. UW-GB goalkeeper Kyle Ihn was credited with three saves.
With his goal, Keats has now scored in every Cardinals game this season except for a 1-0 loss to Oral Roberts. Also, the 2-0 win is the first time Wisconsin-Green Bay has allowed more than one goal in the 2015 season.
The Cardinals are back home to host Central Arkansas next Friday at 8 p.m. at Benson Stadium. Their previous encounter went UIW's way earlier this season, when they took a 2-1 victory at UCA's home field on September 6.
