BEAUMONT, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word tennis teams were each defeated on Friday afternoon, 6-1 by Lamar University at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
The UIW women fell to 2-17 on the season with their loss. They were defeated at both #1 and #2 doubles. The #3 doubles team of
Malisa Vatanadilok and
Maria Batchinsky were tied with Hanna Elfving and Stephanie Marchena, 6-6 when the overall doubles point was decided.
In singles action,
Matea Zemunik defeated Anna Spengler at the #2 position, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. It proved to be the only point the Cardinals would earn in the match. No other UIW player won a set in singles.
Rachel Sadiq lost 7-5, 6-4 to Katya Lapayeva at #1 singles.
The UIW men suffered a similar fate to the UIW women. The doubles point was up for grabs. The UIW #2 team of
Josip Smoljan and
Leonard Ivic won 8-6 while Lamar's #3 team won 8-1. The UIW #1 team of
Tucker Brown and
Joey Vatanadilok went to a tie-break where they lost 10-4 to Nikita Lis and Jeandre Hoogenboezem and the point went to LU.
Vatanadilok won his #3 singles match over Hoogenboezem 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, but he was the only one to get a win for the Cardinals. Brown lost to Benny Schweizer 7-6, 1-6, 11-9 at #4 singles.
The UIW women are back in action on Saturday at Sam Houston State at 1 p.m.
