Softball Drops Two

LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA – After starting the season with a win Friday, the University of the Incarnate Word softball team dropped two games to Central Arkansas and Eastern Illinois on Saturday at Lamson Park in Louisiana Classic.

In the first game, the Cardinals (1-2) gave up three home runs, including a grand slam to conference rival Central Arkansas in a 12-3 non-conference loss.

After the Cardinals went up 1-0 after one inning with a Shelbi Swenson (Elgin/Elgin HS) run-scoring single, the Bears responded with six runs of their own in the top of the second and never looked back.  Sam Forest led the Bears with a grand slam that helped her to a big 6-RBI game with three hits in five tries and two runs scored.

Cardinals' leadoff hitter, Danielle Ramirez (San Antonio/Marshall HS) had a pair of hits and an RBI, while Swenson had the only other RBI for UIW, going 2-for-3 on the day.

Shivaun Landeros took home the win for the Bears with a complete game, giving up six hits, one earned run and striking out two in her first win of the season. She did not allow an extra base hit in the game and walked one batter.  Brooke DuBois (Pearland/Pearland HS) took the loss after giving up four runs in one inning and a third of work on three hits and three free passes.

In the second game of the day, the Cardinals could not get much offense going scoring only one run on six hits in the 6-1 loss to Eastern Illinois.  The Cardinals (1-2) once again got on the board first, this time with some help from the Panthers' defense. Ramirez scored on an error, but that would be it for the Cardinals' scoring.

Ramirez and Monique Miller (Hewitt/Midway HS) both got two hits each to combine for four of UIW's six hits in the game.

Toenyes made up for the error on defense with her offense. She went 3-for-3 with two home runs, four runs batted in, scored two runs and walked once to lead the Panthers (1-2) to their first win of the season.  Jessica Wireman got the win for the Panthers going all seven innings and giving up only one unearned run on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

Kristin Hebert (Humble/Atascosita HS) was handed the loss, but also went the distance for the Cardinals giving up six runs, only four earned, on 11 hits, walking two and striking out one.

The Cardinals are back in action Sunday when they face these two teams again, starting with Central Arkansas at 9 a.m., and finishing the weekend against Eastern Illinois at 11:30 a.m.
