ARLINGTON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team opened 2015 with a 5-2 loss at UT-Arlington on Saturday.
The Cardinals (0-1) played in a cluster of preseason tournaments in the fall before embarking upon their dual match season and headed to Arlington with a number of their top flight performers returning for 2015. Among them were
Leonard Ivic and
Josip Smoljan, who both won their singles match at the #1 and #2 seed. Ivic was efficient in winning at #1 singles by allowing Daniel Armengol to win just one game out of twelve, with the final score finishing at 6-0, 6-1. Smoljan took his match to three sets after dropping the first 6-3, but came back to win 6-3, 6-4 against Sebastian Erimicioiu.
The Mavericks then went on to win the next four singles matches and also found success in the doubles competition winning two out of the three contests. Despite the UIW duo of Joey Vatanadilo and
Tucker Brown winning their #3 doubles match by a score of 6-3 against Stefan Williams and Pablo Colvee, the Mavericks were able to pick up the doubles point by winning at #1 and #2.
The Cardinals are back in action on Sunday and will hope to pick up their first win against the University of Tulsa at 10 a.m.
