TULSA, OKLAHOMA – Another late goal from Oral Roberts halted the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team from getting their second straight win. They were dealt a tough 3-2 decision at the Chase Soccer Complex on Tuesday night.
In a first half that was full of action, both the Cardinals (1-6) and the Golden Eagles (4-3-1) exchanged scoring to end the half with two goals apiece. Junior forward
Dylan Kelly (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic) opened up the rally for the Cardinals with a goal just seven minutes in. Alex De La Garza was credited with the assist after delivering the ball from the right hand side to Kelly who finished well with the outside of his foot.
ORU forward Matthew Rogers then took the game to 1-1 with a goal at the 21 minute mark, but the celebration was short lived as UIW midfielder
Noah Keats (Exeter, England/The King's School) took the Cardinals lead to 2-1 just five minutes later. Keats earned his third goal of the season after calmly slotting home a deflected ball along the floor that found the back of the net.
With only 30 seconds left in the half, Gerardo Salas levelled the playing field for ORU after UIW failed to clear a corner kick. Arturo Rodriguez found Salas, who was able to score from inside the box.
In the second half, the game remained intense with both UIW and ORU firing shots in an attempt to take the lead. The Cardinals remained snake-bitten this year when Rogers sealed the game with a goal in the 89
th minute, making it too late to stage a comeback. It was the third time this year that UIW has lost on a goal coming in the last 10 minutes of the game and second time that it has been the Golden Eagles dealing the defeat.
The Cardinals posted a total of 13 shots with 10 shots on goal, requiring the Golden Eagles goalkeeper Ben LaCourse to make a game high of eight saves. ORU posted 16 shots with nine shots on goal, which asked Cardinal goalkeeper
Kieran O'Boyle (Blackpool, England/St. Mary's Catholic) to make six saves.
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday as they open their Western Athletic Conference inaugural season at home against Houston Baptist University. They kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Benson Stadium.
