SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team were dealt a heavy 3-0 defeat against Seattle University on Sunday, with two goals in the first twenty-one minutes proving to be too much for the Cardinals.
For the first time in their Division I history the Cardinals (6-8-1, 5-2-1) lost by a deficit of more than one goal as the Redhawks (10-5-1, 5-2-1) fired a total of 17 shots with six shots on goal. It was set pieces created by the home team that seemed to be the biggest threat for UIW, with their first two goals being scored off of corner kicks.
The opening goal of the game came after just 1:46 minutes of play when Nick Prasad finished an assist by Hamza Haddadi who made a touch in the box following the corner taken by Ian Hines-Ike. Nineteen minutes later Haddadi then went on to score himself, this time off of a header from another corner kick taken by Hines-Ike.
The second half saw only one goal coming from Redhawk freshman Josh Greene. A through ball from Cameron Rohani found Greene in the box who finished low into the bottom left hand corner.
Chijioke Akujuobe (Houston/Langham Creek) had the best chance for the Cardinals in the final minutes of the match. After he picked up a loose ball he drove into the box and created a one-on-one opportunity with Seattle goalkeeper Shane Haworth. A great save shut down the shot attempt and preserved the shutout for the Redhawks. Haworth made a total of six saves in the match. Cardinal goal keeper
Kieran O'Boyle (Blackpool, Eng./St Mary's Catholic College) made a total of three saves.
The Cardinals are back in action next weekend as they return to Benson Stadium for their final home stand of the season. They play Air Force Academy on Friday at 7 p.m. and UM-Kansas City on Sunday at 1 p.m.
