Ragin' Cajuns Top UIW Men's Tennis

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team lost their opening match of the season on Friday afternoon to visiting University of Louisiana, 6-1 at the Clarence Mabry Tennis Center.

The Ragin' Cajuns (1-0) opened the match by winning two of the three doubles matches to earn the first point.  In singles play, Hunter and Yates Johnson kept the pressure up on the Cardinals (0-1) by winning at #5 and #6 singles.

The Cardinals finally got going in the final four singles matches.  Leonard Ivic (Podstrana, Croatia/Economic Administration) and Brandon Davis (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) each lost in straight sets and each lost one set in the tie-break.  Josip Smoljan (Citluk, Bosnia/Srednja Skola) lost a first set tie-breaker against Damian Farinola at #3 singles and came back to win the second set, 6-4.  In the third set, Farinola topped Smoljan 10-8 in a super set.

The Cardinals picked up their only point at #1 singles.  Jair Assuncao (Londrina, Brazil/Carmina Grabner HS) defeated Edgar Lopez, 6-4, 6-5 (7-2) in straight sets.

UIW is back in action on January 31 at home against St. Mary's at 10 a.m.
