John Maley

John Maley joined the Incarnate Word baseball coaching staff in the summer of 2007 as the pitching coach.  He has overseen the construction of some of the top pitching staffs in school history.  The Cardinals have posted team earned run averages below 5.00 in each of the past five seasons after reaching that figure only once in the previous 11 seasons.

In his first season with the Cardinals in 2008, Maley helped guide Adam Rimlinger to a 13-1 record setting the school single season mark in the process.  The following season, Chris Armijo was his star pupil going 11-0 with a 2.22 ERA and earning first team All-America honors.  The 2009 team posted a 4.29 ERA and held opponents to a .256 batting average.

In 2010 and 2011, the Cardinals pitching staff was led by the left arm of Kirk Jewasko.  He went 12-3 with a 3.38 ERA in 2010 and was named the Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Year.  The following year, Jewasko went 12-1 with a 3.45 ERA and earned second team All-America honors under the tutelage of Maley.  In addition, Alfredo Caballero went 6-1 with 10 saves and a school record 1.26 ERA in 2010 while Jorge Guarneros was 11-1 with a 2.83 ERA and both earned first team all-conference honors.

In 2012, Maley’s staff suffered some setbacks, but he was still able to put together a strong group led by Lone Star Conference first teamer Marc Gomez and freshman Dylan Boss, who earned second team all-conference honors.  The 2013 season saw newcomers Alexis Garza and Geno Encina join the staff and pitch extremely well.

Maley has had two pitchers toss no-hitters for the Cardinals.  Nathaniel Ramirez pitched the only perfect game in school history in 2008 and then Keith Vasquez tossed a no-hitter in 2009.

Maley joined the University of the Incarnate Word with 14 years of collegiate experience.  He tutored hurlers who piled up more than 6,000 innings and recorded over 5,600 strikeouts.  In the age of aluminum bats, his pitchers recorded 84 complete games, posted a cumulative 3.68 earned run average and allowed a .238 batting average.

He spent the majority of his 14 seasons as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at St. Mary’s University.  After that, he was at Laredo Community College for one year as the head coach and then took the pitching coach job at Texas State.

During his stint at St. Mary’s, the Rattlers were perennial contenders for titles in both the Heart of Texas and Heartland conferences.  One of the highlights of Maley’s career came in 2001 when the Rattlers won the NCAA Division II national championship and posted a 50-13 record.  During his coaching career at St. Mary’s, pitchers recorded nine no-hitters, 22 one-hitters and 214 complete games while breaking virtually every league pitching record.

Maley began his college coaching career at Henderson State where he was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for two seasons.  Prior to coaching at the college level, Maley coached three seasons at the high school level -- Pettus High School and Yorktown High School.

A native of Richeyville, PA, Maley graduated from Texas State in 1986 and then received a master’s degree in education from Henderson State.  He has two children, Emily and Kash.
