Dominique Allen (Converse/Judson HS) and
Keila Rodriguez (Brownsville/Rivera HS) in the 800 meters. Allen out-kicked Rodriguez to win in a school record time of 2:13.15 while Rodriguez crossed the line in 2:14.60. In the 200 meters, senior
Jasmine Waring (San Antonio/Randolph HS) finished third and became the first runner in school history to break 24 seconds with a time of 23.99.
Overall, the UIW women won nine events on Saturday.
Sarea Alexander (San Antonio/MacArthur HS) took the triple jump with a leap of 39-8,
Gabrielle Estrada (Boerne/FEAST) won the discus with a throw of 143-5 and Waring cleared 5-5.75 to win the high jump. The team also won the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400-meter relays.
"
Jasmine Waring enjoyed the senior day stage," said UIW head coach
Derek Riedel. "It was fun watching her break that elusive 24-second barrier that she's been chasing for three years.
Ashley Joyner had a good PR in the high jump and
Jane Arinze had a big day. I was pleased with the middle distance performances competing mostly against themselves.
Myah Antwi was our MVP with her two-foot shot put record. The women are strong and hungry to get to the conference meet and compete for some championships. "
The UIW men's team won seven events starting with a triple jump victory by
Robert Allen (San Antonio/Brackenridge HS). He went 47-7.25 and that was followed by
Luke Killough's (Utopia/Utopia HS) in the high jump with a clearance of 6-3.5.
Freshman
Clinton Cole (Temple/Temple HS) dominated the sprint events. He won the 100 meters in 10.50 and the 200 in 21.14. He is the third fastest 100-meter runner in school history and second fastest in the 200 meters. He also anchored the winning 4x100 relay team.
Senior
Charles Hall (San Antonio/St. Anthony's HS) ran a strong time in the 400-meter hurdles winning in 53.91. The 4x400 relay team capped off the meet with win in a time of 3:19.27.
"The men had some strong performances at our last home meet of the season," said Riedel. "Clint Cole's 100 and 200 performances were impressive. He's rounding into top form just in time for conference.
Tristan Zaragoza was a bright spot in the shot and Andrew Luethner had a nice PR in the long jump to give us another male over the 7-meter barrier. The men are finally starting to get healthy at just the right time so it's exciting to see it happening."
The Cardinals will be at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight Invitational hosted by Rice University next weekend.
