Track Finishes Strong at UIW Quad Meet

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word track and field teams completed the UIW Quad Meet with a number of strong performances on Friday at Benson Stadium. (Results)

The UIW women's team set three new school records and one stadium record on the second day of competition.  Senior Jasmine Waring (San Antonio/Randolph HS) did not set any of the new school records, but she had a big day for the Cardinals.  She started out by winning the high jump with a clearance of 5-7.5 and just missed the school record at 5-8.75.  She came back with a career best time of 53.77 in the 400 meters to finish second behind teammate Tiffani Mays (Temple/Temple HS) who crossed the line in 53.48.  Both broke the old school record and Mays also nabbed the collegiate stadium record.  Finally, Waring closed out her performance by winning the 200 meters by nearly a second in 24.59.

Sophomore Sarea Alexander (San Antonio/MacArthur HS) picked up the first win of the day for the Cardinals.  She won the triple jump with a mark of 40-2 on her first attempt.  She later ran the opening leg on the winning 4x100-meter relay team that finished in 46.79.

Freshman Mahogani Frazier (Cibolo/Steele HS) and sophomore Keila Rodriguez (Brownsville/Rivera HS) each set school records in their first career home meet.  Frazier ran a time of 14.70 to win the 100-meter hurdles.  Rodriguez led from start to finish in the 800 meters and won with a time of 2:15.70.

The UIW men did not set any school records on the day, but still had a number of strong performances.  Freshman Clinton Cole (Temple/Temple HS) looked strong in the 200 meters and won in a time of 21.37.  He also ran the second leg on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.  Another freshman, Andrew Leuthner (Copperas Cove/Copperas Cove HS) won the 100 meters out of the second heat with a time of 10.77.

Robert Allen (San Antonio/Brackenridge HS) won the triple jump for the second straight meet with a mark of 47-5.75 while Luke Killough (Utopia/Utopia HS) won the high jump with a clearance of 6-4.  The Cardinals had four jumpers go over 45 feet in the triple jump.

The Cardinals also won both hurdle events.  Douglas Bradshaw (San Antonio/Antonian HS) missed his personal best in the 110-meter hurdles to win in 15.47.  Charles Hall (San Antonio/Antonian HS) held off Collin Sepulveda (San Antonio/O'Connor HS) to win the 400 hurdles in 54.23.

Both Incarnate Word teams are back in action next Friday and Saturday at the Victor Lopez Classic hosted by Rice University.
