FRISCO, Texas -- Junior Gabriel Evans of the University of the Incarnate Word Men's Tennis Team has been selected Southland Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
"Gabe has improved his game tremendously here at UIW," said head coach Jonas Andersson. "Winning against a nationally-ranked player will give him and the team more confidence knowing they can compete at the highest level"
Evans, a San Antonio native by way of John Jay High School, upset the 63rd ranked player in the country, Baylor's Bjoern Petersen, 6-4, 6-3. He then took the 39th ranked player from BU, Johannes Schretter, to the limit, 6-1, 7-5. Resuming SLC play, Evans joined Sebastian Mortier in defeating their New Orleans counterparts, 6-4, to clinch the doubles point. He later defeated UNO's Frederico Boscarino in number one singles, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to keep UIW undefeated in conference play. Evans has won six of his last seven singles matches.
This award is the second this season, as Paco Bendana earned the honor.
