FRISCO, Texas – For the third week in a row, a member of the University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team has been named the Southland Conference Player of the Week. Junior
Sebastian Mortier earns his first accolade from the conference after his phenomenal week in helping the Cardinals clinch their first SLC championship.
"This is a huge honor for me," said Mortier. "I've always wanted to be Player of the Week. This is the first time ever. This is also a huge step for us, in general, that the team could win the season championship. I'm super proud of everyone and I'm happy that I could contribute. I hope we can go one step further at the conference tournament."
"Sebastian has been playing amazing in our conference matches," said head coach
Jonas Andersson. "Being undefeated in the Southland Conference is very impressive, especially at this high Division I level. He is a hard worker and a great guy. I couldn't be happier for him."
Mortier, a junior from Hanau, Germany, went a perfect 4-0 last week against a pair of teams a combined 31-17. He and his doubles partner,
Gabriel Evans, clinched the doubles point in both of UIW's victories. In both of his singles wins, Mortier gave the Cardinals a commanding 3-0 lead to help UIW win its first Southland Conference title and D1 regular season championship in school history. Under first-year head coach,
Jonas Andersson, the Cardinals went from 1-4 to 5-0 in conference play and will be the #1 seed in the upcoming tournament in Beaumont. On the season, Mortier is 5-0 in conference singles competition.
