SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth for a come-from-behind, walk-off, 7-6 victory against Nicholls in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field. With the win, the Cardinals won the series, 2-1.
 
Trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth with bases loaded, Christian Rodriguez earned an RBI walk to score Mark Whitehead and knot the game at 6-6. Ridge Rogers was then hit by a pitch, scoring Ryan Gonzalez and securing the 7-6 win for the Cardinals.
 
UIW took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. A Ryan Flores single through the right side plated Eddy Gonzalez and Whitehead for the 2-0 advantage.
 
Nicholls drew even in the top of the third inning when two Colonels collected RBI singles. Nicholls used another RBI single in the fourth and a solo home run in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.
 
The Cardinals responded in the seventh frame when an E. Gonzalez RBI single drove in Shea Gutierrez, leaving Nicholls clinging to a 4-3 advantage.
 
The Colonels extended their lead to 6-3 in the top of the eighth with another RBI single and a sacrifice fly, but the Cardinals answered in the bottom of the frame. Flores came home on a Lee Thomas single to right field before Kyle Bergeron scored on an RBI ground out to leave Nicholls with a 6-5 lead before UIW walked off in the bottom of the ninth.
 
NOTABLES

• Travis Magness earned the win, throwing one strikeout and allowing zero hits in 0.2 innings pitched.
• UIW is now 13-3 when scoring in the first inning. The Cardinals are also 20-3 when scoring first.
• E. Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. He is on a nine-game hitting streak and has reached base in 23 consecutive games.
• Flores was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, marking his 10th consecutive game with a hit.
