FRISCO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word senior men's basketball player,
Shawn Johnson, was voted Honorable Mention All-Southland Conference, the league announced Monday.
Voted upon by the league's head coaches and sports information directors, surprisingly, the award is the first post-season accolade for the four-year letterwinner out of New Orleans, La.
The 6'4" guard dominated the UIW record books. He ended his Cardinal career last Saturday ranked second all-time in defensive rebounds (590), second in blocked shots (150), third in 3-point field goals made (197), third in defensive rebound average (5.1), third in blocked shots average (1.3), fourth in total rebounds (710), fourth in minutes played (3,314), fifth in total steals (137), fifth in games started (93), tied-for-sixth in games played (115), and 10th in free throws made (252). Last season, Johnson's 46 blocked shots were the sixth-most in program history in a single season, while his 44 this season rank seventh all-time.
On Dec. 19 at UTEP, Johnson became the 16th member of the 1,000 Point Club in program history and he finished his illustrious career 13th with 1,236 career points. Johnson was twice named Honorable Mention Southland Conference Player of the Week this season: Dec. 18 and Mar. 4. He conveniently began his collegiate career with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds on Nov. 14, 2014 against UT-Tyler.
He scored a career-high 28 points twice: the first came Nov. 26, 2016, against Rice and the second was Feb. 28, 2018, against HBU. This season, Johnson set new career highs in the following categories: rebounds (17, vs. HBU, 2/28/18), field goals made (10, vs. HBU, 2/28/18), assists (5, vs. McMurry, 11/17/17), and steals (6, vs. Southwestern, 11/10/17). He blocked a career-high six shots against Texas A&M International last season. Johnson also made national news, as his dunk on HBU's Asa Cantwell, made SportsCenter's Top 10 list on Mar. 5, 2016.
