AUSTIN, TEXAS – Jerica Love and
Sarea Alexander both shined on the final day of the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays as they posted record-breaking performances in the 100H and long jump, respectively. The Cardinals took a total of six school records back to San Antonio with them in three days of competition.
LEADERS
Jerica Love broke her previous school record in the 100H twice this weekend. Love ran a 13.54 yesterday in the prelims to top the mark she set at the outdoor championships last season by eight-hundredths of a second. She ran a clean 13.32 in the finals to shatter her record, finish fourth, and move into the top 12 national rankings.
Fresh off her second place finish in the triple jump,
Sarea Alexander returned to the runway and set a new school record in the women's long jump. Alexander recorded a leap of 6.23m/20-5.25 to place second overall.
On the men's side,
Ese Akpoyoware (15.26),
David Gallegos (15.49) and
Ricky Waer (15.51) all set collegiate best times in the 110H at the Bobcat Invitational.
Kelechi Emeodi also had a solid day of competition as he claimed a new PR in the men's triple for the second week in a row. He posted a leap of 14.83m/48-8, which is the fourth best mark in school history.
QUOTES
Head Coach Derek Riedel on this weekend's results:
"Texas Relays weekend unofficially kicks off the outdoor season every year. We've been anxious to get back in full swing and we sure did get it going this weekend! It's always a hectic weekend going back and forth between between the relays in Austin at Texas State. The team handled it well and took care of business and as a result we had a half dozen school records. Our goal continues to be to put UIW track and field on the national map in our first year of full D1 eligibility. The strong results we had in Austin helps us continue to accomplish that goal and get us ready for regionals in Sacramento."
