SAN ANTONIO, Texas – In their first year of eligibility as an NCAA Division I member, both the men's and women's cross country teams for the University of the Incarnate Word were named USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.
"UIW track and field always strives to be the absolute best we can be in everything we do," beamed head coach
Dr. Derek Riedel. "With that, the most important pursuit these student-athletes undertake is their academic career. When everyone on the team is a high achiever academically, the outcome is what happened this year – the women finished with a 3.7 and the men finished with a 3.31! 2017 was our first year of eligibility as a cross country program and the team came out of the gate hot and set the tone for future teams to achieve academic excellence. It's only the beginning. We have big goals to have the highest team GPA in the nation this spring and maintain our mantel of the highest Southland team GPA for a second straight year."
The women's cumulative GPA of 3.71 for the fall semester led the Southland Conference and was 17
th in the nation. The men's 3.31 mark was the second highest in the conference behind New Orleans. The ladies featured three student-athletes with perfect 4.0 GPAs in the fall semester:
Julie Kosub,
Danielle Martinez, and
Emily Wilson, while the men had two:
Jordan Cherin and
Chris Winski.
