SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The UIW Men's and Women's Fencing Team will travel to Pasadena California to compete in the Western Regional Qualifier hosted by the California Institute of Technology on March 10th.

This competition will determine which athletes take part in the 2018 NCAA Fencing Collegiate Championships March 21-25 hosted by Penn State University.

A record 10 Cardinal athletes will compete in this national qualifier. "I'm so proud of all the fencers on the team," said head coach John Moreau. "They deserve recognition for the dedication and effort put forth this season. Special recognition has to go to the three athletes who took the challenge of trying a sport they had absolutely no experience in. Volleyball players Bry Hall and Brittany Muller qualified and soccer player Addie Bachle came up short of qualifying by the narrowest of margins."

Leading the way for the men will be two-time NCAA Fencing Collegiate Championship competitor, senior epee Alexander Sless from San Antonio's Clark High School.

Also qualifying for the Men's events are:
Sophomore foil Renars Blumentals from Riga, Latvia
Freshman foil Ryan Zentgraf from Austin, Texas
Freshman epee Patrick Satterfield from Houston, Texas

The women will be represented by last year's NCAA Championship competitor, sophomore foil Myrka Boyd from Corinth, Texas

She will be joined by:
Senior epee Monet Moreau from San Marcos, Texas
Junior epee Isabella Peceli from Sacramento, Calif.
Sophomore epee Juliana Peceli from Sacramento, Calif.
Senior sabre Bryaunea Hall from Copperas Cove, Texas
Junior sabre Brittany Muller from San Antonio's Johnson High School.

Junior sabre Alexandra Krick from Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio, also qualified for the Regional Qualifier, but will be unable to attend the competition.
