ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico- The UIW Track and Field teams wrapped up their first day of competition at the Dr. Martin Luther King Collegiate Invitational (
Results). Action will resume tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. in the Albuquerque Convention center.
LEADERS
Sarea Alexander had a strong day of competition as she shattered her previous school record (19-9) set at the New Mexico Cherry and Silver Invitational back in 2016. Alexander recorded a leap of 6.13m/20-1.50 to take fourth overall.
Dominique Allen claimed a new PR in the 600m. The Judson High School Native crossed the line in 1:35.03 to win her heat and finish runner-up in the event behind professional athlete Jenna Westaway from Brooks. She shaved a little over a second off her previous mark (1:36.10) set in the ABQ Convention Center in 2016.
Freshman
Erekha Sebastion led the women's squad in the 200m. She clocked in at 25.01 for a solid improvement on the season-opening time (25.11) she recorded last weekend at the Ted Nelson Invitational. Senior
LaShawnda Simmons finished in 25.07 to match her indoor PR posted at the indoor conference championships last February.
On the men's side,
Jamarkese Williams competed in his first indoor meet of the season. He cleared 2.02m/6-7.50 on his final attempt to record a new personal best in the event indoors.
Garett Cortez landed a top 10 finish in the men's 3000m while
Clinton Cole placed 11
th out of 65 competitors in the 200m.

Tomorrow's competition will begin with the women's shot put at 9:30 a.m. Running events will start at 10:15 a.m. with the qualifying round of the women's 60H.
