HAMMOND, Louisiana – After a five set loss on Thursday evening to New Orleans, The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team bounced back to triumph over Southeastern Louisiana in four sets.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set one started off in favor of the Cardinals as the team scored the first two points. The Lady Lions struck back to even up the score 4-4. The teams battled it out, both having a chance at the lead, until UIW went on a seven point streak to takeover the set 12-6. The Cardinals kept the momentum going to top the Lady Lions 25-13 for an opening set win.
UIW trailed Southeastern through much of the second. Once the Cardinals got their attack going, they were able to catch the Lady Lions to tie the score 10-10. Set two was close as both teams registered 15 kills; however, the Cardinals came out on top once again. UIW took the second 27-25 to lead the match 2-0.
The Cardinals tallied 12 kills and five errors in the third while Southeastern produced 14 kills and four errors. UIW found itself behind and unable to catch up and set three ended in a 25-20 victory for the Lady Lions.
UIW established a lead and maintained it through the final set for a 25-18 success. The Cardinals totaled 52 kills and a .222 attacking percentage as a team to outlast the Lady Lions for their first conference win of the season.
LEADERS
Autumn Lockley led the team with 15 kills and 16 digs while
Julia Monday contributed 13 kills and four blocks.
Madison Williams paced the team with 47 assists.
Bryaunea Hall registered nine blocks and
Cameron Edwards followed with seven.
Madelynn Miller led the team with 23 digs.
Savannah Alcazar and Chloee Holden were key players offensively for Southeastern as they tallied 14 and ten kills respectively.
UP NEXT
Volleyball will have its first home match of the season against Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The Cardinals will play the defending Conference Champions in the McDermott Convocation Center on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
STAY TUNED
The Cardinals will return to the McDermott Convocation Center to host McNeese on Thursday, Sept. 28. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
