Box Score THIBODAUX, La. – Sam Batley scored a pair of goals and The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team shut out Nicholls, 4-0, in Southland Conference action Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UIW (2-5 overall, 1-1-0 SLC) controlled the match, outshooting the Colonels (3-6-0, 0-2-0 SLC) 25-9.
Emily Halal scored the eventual go-ahead goal in the 26
th minute, as the ball was bouncing around in the box and she beat Colonel netminder, Taylor Benoit.
Batley's first tally came three minutes later, unassisted, as her first shot attempt was blocked, but she would not be denied a second time.
UIW held a 2-0 lead entering halftime, having outshot Nicholls, 12-2.
Batley's second goal came midway through the second half, as
Brooke Hanson sent a cross pass into the box that was finished by the Reagan High School product.
Ari Cantu finished the scoring in the 79
th minute, which was an identical goal as Batley's first, as Cantu's first shot was blocked, then she scored past Benoit on her second attempt.
LEADERS
The four goals were the most since defeating Sam Houston, 4-1, on Oct. 21, 2016. The last time a Cardinal registered a two-goal game was Batley on Sept. 23, 2016, against Southeastern Louisiana.
Katrina Buck got the win in goal as she made one save in 45 minutes.
Sydney Huntsinger stopped two shots in the second half.
Emily Werenskiold led Nicholls with two shots on goal. Benoit took the loss in goal as she made five saves.
