COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word cross country teams started their 2017 campaign strong, finishing third in both races at the Aggie Opener, held at Watts Cross Country Course Friday evening.
LEADERS
Junior
Danielle Martinez led the way for the women, finishing fifth out of 53 competitors in the 4.1 kilometer race. Her time of 14:49.1 was nine seconds shy of her career high.
Not to be outdone was senior
Keila Rodriguez, who crossed in 10
th place with a 15:02.8 clocking, bettering her personal record by 13 seconds.
Junior
Emily Wilson followed close behind, finishing 12
th with a 15:07.3 clocking, beating out Texas A&M's Lauryn Barrientos by .1. Wilson's time was a five-second PR.
The men were led by junior
Garett Cortez, who finished 11
th out of 58 runners. His time of 18:42.5 in the 6k course was just two seconds shy of a Top-10 finish. It was also a new PR of nearly 30 seconds for the Cibolo native.
Juniors
Deion Hardy and Jorge Quinterro finished in 15
th and 17
th place, respectively. Hardy's time of 18:48.9 was another big PR for the Cardinals, this one nearly an entire minute faster. Quinterro was clocked at 18:55.0 was a 39-second PR.
UP NEXT
Following a week off, UIW competes at the Abilene Christian Naimadu Classic on Saturday, Sept. 16. ACU hosts this year's Southland Conference championship.
