FAIRFAX, Va. – Track and field senior Myah Antwi and women's basketball junior Haley Frias have been named to the 2016-17 Arthur Ashe Sports Scholars Teams.

The award recognizes undergraduate students who have excelled in both the classroom and athletic fields. Named for the great tennis player's commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, the award also demonstrates a commitment to community service and student leadership.

Antwi is a thrower on the track team. The native of Huntsville, Texas, has a cumulative GPA of 3.82 in biology. She is a member of both the Dean's List and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Among Antwi's participation off the track:

On the track, Antwi has competed unattached this season and will be available for her final season in 2018 when the Cardinals are Division I eligible and the Cardinals host the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships. In her Cardinal career, she holds the school records in the indoor shot put (45'-9", 2016), outdoor shot put (50'-0", 2016), indoor weight throw (55'-0.75", 2016), outdoor hammer throw (172'-2", 2016), and outdoor discus (151'-4", 2016).

"I'm very proud of Myah for earning this fantastic Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar award," said head coach Derek Riedel. "They could not have nominated a better person and student-athlete. Myah epitomizes the definition of what a student-athlete should be. She is well-rounded in all aspects: top student, conference champion, and intimately involved in campus life and community engagement. She sets a great example for other UIW student-athletes and the UIW Track and Field program to follow!"

Frias is a guard on the women's basketball team who hails from Georgetown, Texas. Frias was also a member of SAAC and boasted a 3.58 cumulative GPA while double-majoring in accounting and management information systems. She was inducted into the National Honor Society of Leadership and Success last summer. Among Frias' contributions off the court:

On the court, Frias was the only Cardinal to start all 29 games this season. She averaged 9.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists on the season, while ranking fourth in the league in both three-pointers made and three-point field goal percentage. Frias set a school record with 79 made three-pointers this season. She also set program and Southland Conference marks for three-pointers made (12) and attempted (23) in a game. Her 12 made shots from long range against LSU-Alexandria tied the NCAA mark set by Cornelia Gayden on Feb. 9, 1995. Frias is one of only three players in the history of Division I women's basketball to make 12 three-pointers in a game. She helped the Cardinals set a new program record for three-pointers made (20) and three-pointers attempted (40) against the Generals. Frias landed Southland Conference Player of the Week honors on Dec. 28.

"We are very proud of Haley's achievements in the classroom and court," said head basketball coach Christy Smith. "Her leadership on and off the court is priceless. There is no one more deserving of this honor."
