SAN MARCOS, Texas –On the final meet before conference championships, the UIW track and field teams used arguably its best day of performances, as the Cardinals set a school record and several personal records on the final day of the Texas State Bobcat Classic.
LEADERS
The Cardinals took two of the top four spots in the women's 1500m, with
Rainy Castaneda second with 4:36.65 and
Keila Rodriguez fourth with 4:40.11. Castaneda's time was a four-second PR for the senior and the third-fastest time in program history. The men fared just as well, as
Garett Cortez finished first overall with a time of 3:49.75, and
Deion Hardy placed third at 3:50.70. It was a six-second PR for Cortez and was a three-second school record. For Hardy, his time was also a PR.
Clinton Cole won the men's 100m dash with a time of 10.38, a new PR and the second-fastest time in school history.
Uchenna Nnaji took home a Top 10 finish with a 10.59 clocking, also a PR.
Robert Allen placed third in the men's triple jump, with 14.79m.
In the women's 4x400 relay, the quartet of Mays,
Victoria Jackson, Simmons, and Allen took home second place with a time of 3:47.71.
Patricia Nintcheu-Momo earned a third-place finish in the women's discus, as her toss of 44.74m/146-9, not only a PR by two meters, but the third-longest mark in school history.
Ashley Joyner placed seventh in the women's high jump with a leap of 1.60m/5-3.0, coming close to matching her season best.
The women's 4x100m relay team, featuring
Jerica Love,
Jane Arinze,
Deja Keys, and
LaShawnda Simmons, finished second overall with a season-best time of 45.89. The men's team, consisting of
Andrew Leuthner, Cole,
Kentonie Thomas, and Nnaji, also finished second with a 40.52 clocking.
Love continued her strong day with a Top 10 performance in the 100m, racing to a PR 11.93 for sixth place.
Tiffani Mays placed fourth in the 400m with a 55.75 clocking while
Dominique Allen was sixth at 57.22, a new season best for Allen. On the flip side,
Jamari Gilbert took home eighth with a 48.50 clocking.
Mays continued to run well, racing to a 24.53 clocking in the 200m, a new PR. Joyner finished 10th with 24.89, also a new PR. In the men's 200, Cole placed fourth overall with a PR time of 21.03, the second-fastest time in school history.
Joshua LeCesne led the men in the 800m, finishing 13th with a season-best time of 1:57.04.
Both teams finished fourth overall, as the men had 67.5 points and the women with 66.

The Cardinals will take a week off before competing in the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships, held at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans, La.
